The Ivatans, a Filipino ethnolinguistic group predominant in the Batanes, build the stone house as a type of their infrastructures designed against the harsh Batanes environment, being a terminal passage of typhoons in the Philippines.
The oldest surviving stone house in Batanes, built in 1887, is the House of Dakay. And it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Building.
On September 13, 1918, a strong earthquake hit the island where most of the town of Ivana was leveled to the ground. The House of Dakay was one of the few houses that remained standing, and one of the five stone houses that have survived to this day.
With the strong and unique architecture of the stone house, it’s definitely worth seeing. 😄
